Straw bale gardening

Here's Penny's straw bale "garden," a few days after planting.  As you can see, one bale has begun to decompose faster than the other.  I've planted tomatoes, a pepper, an eggplant and impatiens to dress it up a little.

The idea is to see if we can truly grow veggies on concrete!

  1. It will be fun to watch the plants grow. I hope you take regular pictures Penny so we can see the progression!

  2. I am finding this spate of very dry weather illustrates another benefit of the straw bales. I was away for 4 days and did not arrange for anyone to water. I lost two baby plants that were at the edge of the garden, but all the others were fine. So I am thinking that the inner portion of the bales holds the moisture but that at the edges, there is much less water for the plants.
